Record global temperatures in 2015/2016 cause a humanitarian displacement crisis

The global temperature records in 2015 and 2016 They are causing a humanitarian crisis that is more than double that of the conflict that causes displacement and migration according to the WMO (World Meteorological Organization).

All the droughts, heatstroke, floods and fires are contributing to the decline in food and water security that affects more than 60 million people worldwide. If we count on 2016 to be the year with the highest temperatures on record, we can imagine what 2017 will be like.

It is quite possible that 2016 will be the year of highest heat recorded According to the WMO, with global temperatures even higher than those that broke all temperature records in 2015.

Extreme temperatures

Preliminary data indicates that 2016 global temperatures are approximately 1,2 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Global temperatures for January to September 2016 have been about 0,88 degrees above the average of 14 degrees for the reference period taken from 1961 to 1990, which is used by the WMO as the base.

Temperatures reached peaks in the first months of the year due to the powerful El Niño event from 2015-2016. Preliminary data for October indicates that they are at a high enough level for 2016 to stay on track for the title of the hottest year on record. This would mean that 16 of the 17 years warmest they have been in this century.

Rising temperatures in 2015 caused the displacement of 19 million people that came out of regions with extreme weather events such as droughts, heatstrokes and floods. These displacements were twice as many as those that occur due to conflict and violence in 113 countries. It is the regions of South and East Asia that dominate these total figures, but there is no region in the world that is not affected. There is still no data for 2016.
