5 years of global temperature records since 2011

Temperatures

New data have been released from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), showing that the five years from 2011 to 2015 were the hottest since temperatures have been recorded.

The report, published in the talks on climate change taking place in Morocco, links human activities with rising temperatures. He maintains that some studies found that burning fossil fuels had increased the likelihood of extreme heat by 10 times or more. The authors cite 2016 as the year that will once again break the record for the highest global temperature.

In its global climate report from 2011 to 2015, WMO maintains that the planet's temperature was 0,57 degrees above average, which is defined as being since 1961 and 1990. The five-year period was the one with the highest temperature for all continents except Africa. Through those years, temperatures over most of Europe were more than 1 degree above the general average over time.

The increase in temperatures is directly linked to the increase in greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. In 2015, the WMO says that CO2 concentrations were 400 parts per million and grew between 1,9ppm and 2,99ppm between 2011 and 2015.

The new report highlighted human handprint in those emissions and linked them to extreme weather events. The publication cites that the greatest influence of the use of fossil fuels on the climate has been in the probability of extreme heat. Some studies claim that the probability has increased by ten times or more.

Another significant event that MMO believes are linked to the hottest temperatures, includes the drought in East Africa between 2010-2011 that caused an estimated 258.000 deaths.

The records year after year has increased risk of extreme events such as heat stroke, drought, record rainfall, and flooding.
