The sector itself provides direct work for more than 20000 people and generates exports of almost 3000 billion euros. Currently the communities with the most installed power are Castilla la Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia.

In 2005, the government approved a new national law with the objective of reaching 20 MW of production in 000.
