The results of the renewable energy auction

renewable auction

At last we know the result of the renewable capacity auction called by the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda. The auction has ended with the award of 5.037 megawatts. This result is surprisingly something if we count with the 3.000 megawatts that were initially anticipated.

The great advantage of this is that the 5.037 megawatts auctioned are at the maximum discount and, therefore, do not have costs for the consumer. Do you want to know more about the results of this auction?

According to the Ministry of Energy there has been a huge demand for energy and this has made it necessary to apply the clause provided for in the call. This clause (if this situation had to occur) allowed to increase the power that was awarded and this has finally been the case. Of the more than 5.000 megawatts that have been distributed among forty companies, 3.909 megawatts correspond to photovoltaic installations and 1.128 megawatts to wind farms.

However, the award of this energy has guidelines to follow and conditions to meet: the projects will have to be in operation before 2020. This is done to ensure compliance with the proposed projects and is carried out as follows: as the promoters meet the milestones in the execution of the projects, the offers received will be returned to them. In this way, it becomes a guarantee system that ensures that the awarded energy will be used for the creation of renewable energy projects.

The department headed by Álvaro Nadal has highlighted that the discounts obtained "guarantee that the energy produced will be paid exclusively by the market, in equality with conventional non-renewable technologies, without additional premium from the electricity system in the central price scenarios" of the wholesale market.

Because the auction is technologically neutral, has allowed power to be awarded only to those facilities that are more efficient, that is, those that have an energy efficient system that optimizes resources to generate the maximum possible energy.

Taking into account and adding the amount of energy awarded in this auction in the previous one in May, this year 8.037 megawatts of new distributed renewable power have been awarded between 3.910 photovoltaic, 4.107 wind and 20 other technologies.

The Ministry of Energy has indicated that thanks to this auction, a better distribution of the power generation capacity of the different sources (renewable and conventional) can be guaranteed and that they will allow Spain to move towards meeting the objectives of de introduction of renewables established by the European Union for 2020.
