Canarian herds are committed to renewable energy

Renewable energies are not only focused on the industrial field and to generate energy in cities, but also work well in everything related to agriculture. An increasing number of cattle farmers in the goat and beef sector are those who, in the Canary Islands, they are switching to renewable energy to save energy.

Do you want to know what advantages they obtain from this energy in livestock?

There are areas of the Canary Islands that are further from the main electricity grid and, therefore, the cost of energy is more expensive. Faced with this situation, more and more farmers are investing in renewable energies such as solar photovoltaic and mini-wind energy (since they are very small wind turbines) to save on electricity.

This commitment to renewable energy It has given great possibilities of economic growth to the cattle and goat sectors of the Canary Islands. The increase in technology allows them to be self-sufficient in energy and this means a great saving in production costs and in pollution with CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

The Canary Islands are not governed by the Sun tax, so the expansion of photovoltaic solar energy in the livestock sector can be favored.

Advantages of using renewables in livestock

The delegation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria of the company Cambio Energético has been preparing some of the largest isolated installations in the Canaries on farms. This leads to improvements in production costs and lower energy costs.

The places in which this production has focused is Tenerife, a farm in the south of Fuerteventura, an artisan cheese farm and two other livestock businesses, one goat and the other beef. All of them have decided to forget fossil fuels and switch to renewables. With this they obtain an energy that does not pollute, cheaper and reduce electricity consumption in a significant way.

"We have used materials from prestigious brands and the most innovative configurations on the market to guarantee self-consumption in isolated areas of the electrical network, which will allow farmers to immediately obtain significant economic savings," says Ramón Jesús Domínguez, Change Manager Energetic.

Since the areas in which renewables have been installed are more isolated, the advantage they obtain is even greater and, if they do not have to account for the Sun tax, more savings entail.

Artisan cheese makers they have 120 solar panels that they installed a year ago and have recently installed a small 5.000W wind turbine (hence it is mini wind energy) so that energy generation is better optimized and costs are reduced. They have calculated the savings that have led them to switch to renewables and it amounts to more than 20.000 in addition to not polluting. Before, it cost them more than 100.000 euros to bring energy to the farm. Faced with this situation, the owners of the farm have decided to bet on the sun and the wind (the main source of energy in the Canaries) and save money.

Cutting edge technology

In addition to renewable energy, they have online monitoring equipment capable of making adjustments to prevent possible incidents in the energy supply and it also allows you to obtain a monthly saving of approximately 2.000. They are also capable of covering power peaks of up to 50kW with which they can run the milking machine, cold tanks and water pumps.

This technology offers more electrical energy production at a lower cost. With mini-wind energy, an attempt is made to optimize energy production. In the south of Gran Canaria a goat cattle farm it already has 6360 W thanks to its 24 solar panels. They also have 96 photovoltaic modules incorporated to gain self-consumption, this will reduce the costs of the electricity bill by 70%.

As you can see, renewables are making their way into the world of livestock.
