Tesla joins to use batteries with wind power from the sea

Revolution Wind Farm

The American company Tesla, Inc. surprises us again with the Deepwater Wind association.

Deepwater wind, developer of wind farms and Tesla plan to team up to create the world's largest project, combining an offshore wind farm with large-scale electrical storage, the companies announced a few days ago.

The project, called "Revolution Wind Farm" has the expectations of generating nothing less than electricity for fuel about 12 miles (equivalent to approximately 20 km) off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.

In addition to store excess energy in batteries built by Tesla, Inc.

According to Deepwater Wind, “Revolution Wind Farm” will have the capacity to generate about 144 megawatts of wind power or at least enough electricity to feed some 80.000 homes.

In the event that the project is approved by the State, the wind farm would start operating in 2023 and it is also expected to be built alongside another wind farm also proposed by Deepwater Wind.

This second wind farm is known as the “South Fork Wind Project”, another project designed to be used in Long Island, NY

These two companies (Tesla, Inc and Deepwater Wind) proposed “Revolution Wind Farm” as part of a call to Massachusetts for the creation of new sources of renewable energy throughout the State.

Why “Revolution Wind Farm”?

Likewise, the State hopes to generate more clean energy to be able to meet your climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions since they know perfectly well that the Power plants that run on coal and natural gas have historically been the largest source of pollution America's carbon that contributes to climate change.

This project brings together two new industries in the US making renewable energies expand and achieve a higher score on the scale as these energies depend in part on new ways of storing energy (with more difficulty in wind and solar energy) and currently they can only be used with the wind when it blows or there is a very sunny day (without taking into account the yields).

That is why the big batteries that Tesla plans to implant they look like a solution to this big problem, since they allow the renewable energy generated to be used when it is necessary and not when it is produced.

The batteries

Until now, batteries are most often used for store solar energy.

In fact, Tesla has partnered with several electric companies in California to build more batteries and help them use more solar energy.

However, it has not used these batteries to store wind energy anywhere in the US, which it intends to do with this project.

For now, Tesla has not said anything about the type of batteries it intends to use for Revolution Wind Farm but looking at the big batteries that he currently builds like the one in PowerPack Tesla, for sure they will be composed of 16 pods.

These pods weigh about 3 tons when together and are about 7 feet tall.

In addition, the pods are chained in series and provide hundreds of kilowatts of power.

Even so, Tesla declined to comment on the batteries that will be used to store wind power.

Wind farm approval

If approved, the “Revolution Wind” wind farm will be built entirely by Deepwater Wind, which connected the first wind farm off the Rhode Island coast last year achieving the shutdown of a power plant of diesel on Block Island.

On the other hand, Deepwater Wind in a statement said that the pairing of wind power to the coast  will provide clean energy during the times of increased demand for electricity.

In turn, the project intends to avoid the need for the creation of new power plants that they only work on the highest peaks according to the demand of the Americans.

On the other hand, we do not have any comment from the spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources as he does not have the opportunity to read the proposal at the moment but remains pending.
