Terminology and mistakes we make when talking about forest fires

Forest fires

During these days we have been seeing in the news the fires caused in Galicia at the hands of the human being. Most of the fires that have occurred have been intentional.

We know that wildfires have negative consequences for both forests and humans, resources and the economy. In addition, the CO2 emissions emitted during the fire, contribute to the increase of the greenhouse effect and, therefore, to climate change. However, do we know what types of fires there are and the names of those involved in it?

When we are watching wildfire news, it is normal to see wrong or misused vocabulary. For example, to name the alleged perpetrator of the arson, the word arsonist is named. An arsonist is a person who suffers from a disease that consists of the enjoyment of causing fires and observing the consequences of it. Usually these people are under the treatment of a doctor.

The person who sets fire to a forest with premeditation, for profit or simply for evil, he is an arsonist. In other words, the people who are being arrested for the fires in Galicia are arsonists and not arsonists.

When we mean that the fire has human causes, not natural, it is better to say that the fire it has been intentional. If when speaking of fires at the hands of man we say the word provoked, we are referring to something broader. For example, a fire has been caused by caused by a spark, caused by burning stubble, caused by lightning ... So if it is caused by humans, it is better to say that it is intentional.

On the other hand, a controlled fire is one that has been isolated and whose advance and spread has been stopped, and a stabilized fire It is the one that evolves within established lines of control.

It is also common to use the expression "terrain orography". This is redundant, since the word orography is 'the set of mountains of a region, region or country', and therefore the idea of land is already implicit in it.

With these words we will be able to better understand the fire issue and avoid possible mistakes when hearing the news.
