Nanotechnology for solar energy

New developments in the field of Nanotecnology are related to the solar energy, specifically they will be applied in the field of photovoltaic cells. This has been assured by Javier Diez, an expert in fluid dynamics and a specialist in the study of the synthesis and assembly of nanoscopic structures.

From the solar energy, and thanks to these cells you can generate electricity. The problem is that these panels who take advantage of the photoelectric effect until now they were made of silicon plates quite thick, which makes them very expensive. To reduce these costs, what will be done is to replace these panels with new ones manufactured with a metallic nanoparticle grid.

These nanoparticles are generated thanks to a metallic coating placed on a thin sheet of silicon. As the light shines on them, electromagnetic resonances of the surface of the network nanoparticles they are excited, which allows them to couple to silicon and thus increase the efficiency of the cells.

Using this method, what will be achieved is therefore to reduce the final price of the solar cells and to be able to avoid the use of those other more expensive silicon plates. More efficient ways to produce arrays of nanoparticles when applying them. This is one of the main objectives for researchers, since if all this worked, we would be talking about a majority scope. Anyone could face the costs of having this type of cells.
