Gas emissions were reduced in Spain between 2010 and 2014

Greenhouse gases

Greenhouse gas emissions they are almost necessary to be able to contribute to the economic growth of a country. Today, innovative techniques are being developed in the field of renewable energies that help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

In Spain, greenhouse gas emissions, which are responsible for climate change, increased by 0,2% over the previous year in 2014. However, between 2010 and 2014 they were reduced by 8,9%. What is this about?

CO2 emissions in Spain are around 324,2 billion tons. These data come from the Air Emissions Accounts and are publicly disclosed by the  National Statistics Institute (INE). The INE points out that the sector that dumped the most greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere was the supply of energy, gas, steam and air conditioning. This sector increased its emissions by 4,8% compared to the previous year. On the other hand, emissions caused by agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing only rose 2,1%.

Due to the increase in temperatures in summer and in general throughout the year, more refrigeration mechanisms have been used in homes. That is why consumers of these devices increased emissions by 2,7%.

Regarding the total emissions, it has been the manufacturing industry which has concentrated the highest percentage of emissions of these gases in 2014 (25,7% of the total), followed by the supply of electricity, gas, steam, air conditioning and water (23,8%), and from households, that accumulate 21,7%.

The transport and storage sector accumulates 10,5% of total emissions. Thanks to the increase in sustainable policies and the use of public transport or shared cars, the amount of gases emitted has been reduced by 7% compared to the previous year.

During the years 2010 and 2014 the economic crisis stopped o It reduced several economic sectors that caused a lower emission of greenhouse gases, due to less use of fossil fuels.

CO2 it is the gas that corresponds to 80% of the total emissions, followed by methane and nitrous oxide.
