Edible packaging is developed to avoid plastic

One of the most polluting elements that humans use every day are plastic bags. Millions of tons of plastic are dumped into the environment and pollute the waters and soils. Due to their durability, plastic bags become a threat and a nuisance to the vast majority of marine ecosystems around the world.

To alleviate these problems, the Belarusian scientist Tatsiana Savitskaya has presented a new project with which she proposes create edible wrappers to eradicate plastic from the food industry. What are these wrappers based on?

Edible wrappers

Edible wrappers they are nothing more than slices that can be eaten. They are a thin layer that is placed as a barrier between food and the environment to preserve food, but that can be eaten. To give an example that we can understand well, we are talking about an orange. The orange has two layers: the outer and the inner. The inner layer is similar to an edible film.

Therefore, the objective of this edible film is to prolong the life of food while allowing it to be eaten without leaving any plastic or other residue. The main component of these edible films is starch. They can be added flavor so that they can be eaten with greater taste. Flavors like pepper or curry. This combination of flavors is very useful against cancer.

Some foods in which these wrappers could be used are in candies. They could also be used in milk sweets. In this way, we would not have to remove the film, but we could eat it. As for the kitchen, the meats could also be wrapped in edible films to avoid excess waste.

As you can see, alternatives to plastic are beginning to emerge as it is a global problem and increasingly pollutes our oceans.
