Deserts are the best regions to install concentrating solar power plants

Sahara

In vienna an idea was presented during the meeting of the European Union of Geosciences where it is explained that arid areas are the ones that receive the most solar radiation and therefore the best for solar power plant installations, apart from the fact that they do not compete for spaces for agriculture or other human activities.

One of the problems of renewables, at least in solar, are the large areas of land required for its installation, something that could be solved if they were in those deserts as their perfect location. For this very reason, a team of scientists proposes to use the vast spaces of the desert to generate clean energy thanks to the sun.

These desert regions are perfect to install concentrating solar power plants (CPS), a different way of using solar energy that allows to store energy and produce electricity even at night, unlike photovoltaic plants with solar panels. In CSP plants, solar energy is taken from mirrors in a central receiver that reaches very high temperatures. This heat produces steam and moves a turbine that is the one that produces energy or electricity.

The regions with wide deserts are the ones with the highest ratio of solar irradiation. and this allows that to produce electricity is cheaper, since the more irradiation the costs become cheaper. And giving use to areas that are useless is another of its great points in favor.

And if you could think that due to the great distance in which some power plants of this type could be found, you would not have to worry since generating the electricity and taking it to the big cities would be for 20 cents dollar per kilowatt hour.

All a proposal that we hope will find its viability sometime in the near future.
