The Government will demand the highest security conditions for the reopening of Garoña

Garoña Nuclear Power Plant

The reopening of the Garoña nuclear power plant it continues to create controversy between people who are in favor and those who are against. The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, has assured today that the reopening of the plant will have the maximum nuclear safety conditions.

According to Rajoy, the Government it will listen to the opinions of all groups about the reopening of the nuclear power plant in order to decide whether to proceed or not. He has attended a control session of the Government in Congress in which he has been asked questions about the reopening of the plant. Aitor Esteban, the spokesman for the Basque Group, has asked Rajoy to please renounce to extend the useful life of this installation, since in his own opinion it is old and can cause risks.

Reopening conditions

The CSN sets two conditions to reopen Garoña. The first is about making a series of investments to be able to restructure the nuclear power plant and insure it. The second is conducting periodic security reviews.

Before Rajoy makes a final decision on the reopening of the plant, the Government will give hearings to all those institutions that are interested in this matter. After listening to all opinions and / or requests, you will make a decision.

All documentation must be studied

rajoy and esteban

In order to reopen a nuclear power plant, whose facilities have been in operation for almost 30 years, it is necessary to thoroughly study all the available documentation, investigate and carry out safety controls. It is the most prudent and reasonable thing, since we are dealing with nuclear energy, whose disaster can be enormous if there is an accident.

To raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear power plants, we have the Fukushima and Chernobyl accident. Radiation is something very dangerous and long-lasting (even 30 years after the Chernobyl incident, children are still being born with malformations as a result of radiation).

Finally, Esteban has warned that it is a first generation nuclear power plant, the oldest in Spain and that it barely contributes 0,4% of the installed power in Spain, so it will not lower the price of electricity.
