The first offshore wind turbine in Spain will be in Canary waters

The Deputy Minister of Industry, Energy and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, Adrián Mendoza, visited last Thursday, in Arinaga, Gran Canaria, together with the president of Esteyco Energy SL, Miguel Ángel Fernández Gómez, the works of the first wind turbine in Spain which is being installed directly on the seabed and whose assembly is scheduled to finish next May.

The project, in which Gamesa, ALE Heavy-Lift and Dewi-UL also participate, is being carried out in the area of Canary Island Oceanic Platform (Plocan), about 30 meters deep. According to the Canarian deputy councilor, “the fact that the Canary Islands is the place chosen to house the largest wind turbine in Spain shows that the islands have optimal conditions and great potential to promote blue economy projects, related to the use of natural resources from sea".

Prototype partially funded by the European Union

The prototype, which has an approximate cost of 15 million euros, is partially financed by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 program. The wind turbine, according to the Government of the Canary Islands, is being installed "without the need for large ships or marine cranes, thereby significantly reducing the cost«. As explained by the president of Esteyco Energía, the auxiliary equipment is currently being assembled, some of them built in the Astican shipyards of the Canary Islands, necessary for their final transfer.

In addition, it is waiting to receive the Gamesa's five megawatt (5 MW) wind turbine and its assembly in the month of April.
