Renewable energies are making a great space in markets around the world. Every time the technology related to renewables is more developed and more efficient. We can be surprised by the things that are invented and the incredible utility that it can have. We also find devices based on renewable energy that are capable of taking advantage of things that we could not even imagine being capable of generating electrical energy.
Well, with a world where renewable energies are increasingly on the rise, countries are trying to improve their capacity for power generation and self-sufficiency. On the one hand, we have Germany, which is producing so much renewable energy that they had to pay consumers to use it. On the other hand, Portugal is making strong efforts to stop climate change. It has managed to maintain the supply of electricity from renewables for four consecutive days.
Renewable energies and self-sufficiency
This fact has been recognized for its great effort in the development of renewables. For four consecutive days they have been able to source only renewable energy. Along with Portugal, there are also European countries such as Denmark or Sweden who want to become the first countries capable of totally freeing themselves from dependence on fossil fuels.
With these initiatives, they are contributing to the fight against climate change, since during the days in which renewables have been used to generate electricity, greenhouse gases have not been emitted into the atmosphere. What is a real achievement is not only that Portugal has been able to supply itself for four days with only renewable energy, but that these initiatives are indicative that Europe can become a green community if all countries are putting their own effort in the development of technologies in the field of renewables.
Living on renewables is not a utopia
Since renewable energies were discovered all over the world, it has always been a utopia to think that a country can supply itself with energy only by using renewables. It has always been commented that it can cover 20% of the total demand and that it would help in reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. However, this feat that Portugal has achieved shows that living from renewable energies is not a utopia, it can be real.
This is just the beginning of a long road full of commitments and efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to the fight against climate change. In addition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by using renewables is a great relief to the environment.
After this success, they will now increasingly try to improve the amount of renewable energy they are capable of producing. We also have to emphasize how important this feat has been, since until just three years ago, Portugal generated half of its energy from fossil fuels and almost a third of it from nuclear energy. However, this trend has changed in about a year. Now renewable energy is present in just under half of all electricity generated.
“These data show that Portugal can be one of the most ambitious countries towards the transition to a net consumption of electricity from 100% renewable sources, with large reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that aggravate climate change ", assures the Portuguese NGO for sustainability.
As I have mentioned before, this shows that the change towards an energy transition focused on renewables is possible and that a country can perfectly supply itself with renewable energies. But to achieve this you need to be ambitious and have the willpower to immerse yourself in the change towards an energy model based on renewables.
