Monday, February 6, Spain generated more wind power than any other European country

Wind

Spain generated more wind power this Monday than any other European country, reached 311 GWh and covered with this energy 50% of demand. Consumers under the PVPC were able to save 1,15 euros / MWh through the wind throughout the day compared to the previous Monday, that is, 16%. The latest record for wind power in Spain was daily production, on February 12, 2016, with a generation of 367 GWh and 47,7% coverage of demand.

The enormous wind that we have had these first days of the month has changed the upward trend that electricity prices suffered in the previous month of January. "As an example, on Monday, February 6, the high wind power generation, of 311.000 MWh, was 102% higher than the previous Monday, January 27, and consumers benefiting from the PVPC saved 1,15 euros / MWh at throughout the day compared to that day, which represents a saving of 16% ", they point out from PREPA.

During the last few weeks we have heard a lot about (including our Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy) on how the lack of wind has been one of the factors that has caused the rise in electricity prices. Although it was by no means the main reason (there are both structural and temporary factors that have had more weight), it is true that in January the wind has blown somewhat less than in other years. In February, things have changed.

And it is that last Monday Spain was the first European country in wind generation with 311 GWh compared to Lithuania's 2GWh. Behind our country, Germany and Italy ranked second and third, with 125 GWh and 116 GWh respectively.

As we have commented in other posts, wind power increased last year in Spain by 38 MW, which placed the total at December 31, 2016 at 23.026 MW, according to data collected by the Wind Business Association. And it is that in the last three years, only 65 MW of wind power have been installed in the country, compared to 2.334 MW in the previous three-year period.

From PREPA they assure that “If the 2.500 MW of wind power foreseen for the end of 2016 in the 2015-2020 Energy Planning had been installed, Spain could be benefiting from a higher electricity generation at low cost and, therefore, lower electricity prices. In other words, if those 2.500 MW planned were operating, wind generation would have increased by 10% with its corresponding depressing effect on the price of electricity.".

Saved € 227 for each average consumer in 2012-2015

In fact, it is necessary to say that if in Spain there were not 23.000 MW of wind power that provide clean and indigenous energy to consumers, in 2016 the electricity market price would have been 15,26 euros / MWh higher -28% -, according to PREPA calculations.

Other wind energy records in Spain

The latest record for wind power in Spain was daily production, on February 12, 2016, with a generation of 367 GWh and 47,7% coverage of demand.

A year earlier, on January 29, 2015 at 19:27 p.m., he broke a record of instantaneous power reaching 17.553 MWh, which at that time represented 45,9% of the demand for electricity and 76% of the total installed wind power in operation. Thus, it exceeded 17.014 MW on February 6, 2013.

The #DaylyWind platform

The information provided by the #DaylyWind platform comes from more than 13.000 data points collected of the transmission system operators, energy exchanges, WindEurope and Eurostat statistics.

The first tab of the tool shows what percentage of the demand has been covered with wind the previous day. The second tab presents the countries that generated the most energy both on land and offshore, a classification that changes with time and market conditions. The third tab offers information on the energy mix of each Member State by hours. And finally, the fourth tab offers data on cross-border trade.
