Microsoft's plans to switch to 50% renewable energy by 2018

Many movements can be made by companies (like this Ikea proposal), corporations and countries to mitigate the effect of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere. Technology companies are betting on improving their infrastructures to make them "greener" and cleaner, as is the case with Microsoft.

As Microsoft continues to open new data centers, the company has now committed to being greener, as reported by Neowin. As part of that commitment, it declares that it wants to reach the use of 50% renewable energy by 2018. A great example for one of the great technology companies.

Not only has the company promised that the 50 percent of the energy will be renewable for 2018, but has shared a promise for the future with what it expects to be 60 percent by 2020. This would be a good increase from the current 44 percent renewable energy use.

By increasing the use of renewable energy throughout your business, it is transferred into a reduction of energy costs, particularly in its Azure data centers, as well as all its offices globally. Apart from saving costs, this move will be very good for the environment.

It is in a blog where Microsoft Green announces the engagement:

We are committed to improve our energy mix by setting the objective of increasing the percentage of solar, wind and hydrological energy that we acquire directly and through the network to 50 percent by 2018. 60 percent is the goal for the next decade and what would be a percentage that would increase in time. Right now, we have 44 percent and we have signed a new agreement to get 20 megawatts of solar power to the grid in Virginia by next year.

It is clear that the company has big plans and ambitions for your green future and the mark it leaves on the world in which we all live.
