Air quality in Madrid
The main concern that the Madrid government should have would be the health of its citizens. With a polluted air, the cases of respiratory, cardiovascular and circulation diseases are increasing.
Madrid suffers from serious air pollution problems due to the abundant traffic every day. Given that the main cause of air pollution is traffic, the measures should be aimed at reducing the traffic of motor vehicles and promoting a “change in the transport model, by transferring trips by car to public transport or walking by bicycle and on foot.
The organization Ecologists in Action recalls in a statement that in Spain more than 30.000 people die prematurely each year due to poor air quality, and Madrid and its metropolitan area "are one of the black spots."
Plan to reduce pollution
The Government of Madrid will approve a plan to comply with current legislation on air pollution. If properly followed, this plan will be able to reduce emissions by 2020% by 40 coming from traffic. This would contribute 25% less nitrogen oxides breathed by citizens.
Motorcycles have been criticized, since they are usually given an exception. However, many of these vehicles emit more pollutants than gasoline cars and generate more noise.
