Amsterdam joins the energy transition from natural gas to renewables

Amsterdam

The most widely used fossil fuel to generate electrical energy is charcoal. Amsterdam changed a few years ago from the use of coal to natural gas and now wants to forget this non-renewable energy and bet on clean energy.

The Amsterdam City Council has launched an energy reconstruction plan with the aim of ensuring that the city be free of CO2 emissions. It will be achieved by the year 2050 and for this the consumption of natural gas will be reduced little by little.

To be able to fulfill the Paris Agreement Attempting to reduce the effects of climate change in order to avoid a two-degree increase in temperature, Amsterdam intends to make major changes in the energy supply of its homes. For the next four years it is expected that about 100.000 households They can consume electricity from an alternative electricity grid fed with energy left over from industries and derived from burning waste. Today this type of energy supply is feeding about 70.000 homes served by Nuon, an electricity and gas company that also operates in Belgium and the United Kingdom.

One of the reasons why this initiative has been chosen is because the problems of obtaining natural gas from the North Sea. In order to avoid generating additional expenses for citizens due to this increase in the costs of natural gas extraction, the city council has asked the State for help.

Right now it is the electric companies and the energy companies that control the meters and the bills of the houses. They are also the ones that make the large investments to be able to maintain the infrastructures, that is why, in order to make this energy change correctly, it must gradually so that everyone can join.
