In 2015 Spain decreased its renewable consumption by 3%

Spain decreased the consumption of renewable energies by 3,1% in 2015, standing at 13,9% of the total. Instead, in Europe increased by 9% compared to the previous year, representing 13% of the primary energy consumed. All this information can be consulted in the report 'A renewable horizon, the challenge for Europe towards 2020' carried out by EAE Business School.

According to these documents, this setback is the fault of the decrease in subsidiesAlthough 2017 million euros will be allocated in 336, this will help Spain meet Europe's challenge of 20% renewable energy by 2020.

Consumption sources

Oil remained the main source of energy in Spain, with 42,2%, ahead of natural gas, with 19,9%, and renewables, which represent 13,9%. While the nuclear energy represents 12,1% and coal 11,7%.

The EAE business school points out that these data coincide with "a drastic fall" in oil prices, which have helped its higher consumption as a source of energy and a decline in renewables.

Regarding the contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) According to the renewable energy typology, at the end of 2015 photovoltaic solar has been the one that has contributed the most, with 32,75%; followed by wind, with 21,12%; thermoelectric solar, with 16,45%; electrical biomass, with 16,30%; and biofuels, with 5,90%.

The study considers that, despite the slight decrease in contribution to GDP that has been registered since 2012, the sector has capacity and potential enough to contribute around 1% to the Spanish GDP.

Objective 2020

To expand the consumption of renewables, 3 auctions have been held, in fact the last one was held a few days ago.

The auction has ended with the award of 5.037 megawatts. This result is surprisingly something if we count with the 3.000 megawatts that were initially anticipated.

According to the Ministry of Energy there has been a huge demand for energy and this has made it necessary to apply the clause provided for in the call. This clause (if this situation had to occur) allowed to increase the power that was awarded and this has finally been the case. Of the more than 5.000 megawatts that have been distributed among forty companies, 3.909 megawatts correspond to photovoltaic installations and 1.128 megawatts to wind farms.

ACS

ACS was the great winner of the renewables auction on this occasion. Through its subsidiary Cobra has taken more than half of what the Government auctioned,  specifically 1.550MW of photovoltaic solar power.

El grupo Forestalia has been awarded 316MW of photovoltaic energy also in the bid held by OMIE this Wednesday. In addition, Enel Green Power España, owned by Endesa, has managed to acquire 339MW.

All companies have managed to enter the bid with offers at the maximum discount that allowed the auction, which was 65% of the standard investment value of a photovoltaic plant. This discount is higher than in the May auction, when it was at 59%.

The group company chaired by the president of Madrid by Florentino Pérez, specialized in seComprehensive services of electricity, gas, communications and railways, thus becomes the winner ahead of XElio, with 455 MW; Endesa, through Enel Green Power, with 339 MW; the Forestalia Group, with 316 MW (in the previous one it took 1.200 of 3.000); Gas Natural Fenosa, 250 MW, like Solaria; Opde, 200 MW; Prodiel, 182 MW. Gestamp, which owns 20% of XElio (80% was sold to the KKR fund), has been awarded 24 MW. Alter has achieved 50 MW and Alten, 13 MW.

However, the award of this energy has guidelines to follow and conditions to meet: the projects will have to be in operation before 2020. This is done to ensure compliance with the proposed projects and is carried out as follows: as the promoters meet the milestones in the execution of the projects, the offers received will be returned to them. In this way, it becomes a guarantee system that ensures that the awarded energy will be used for the creation of renewable energy projects.
