A 13-year-old boy creates an invention to stop the Maasai from killing more lions

We usually bring quite a lot of news related to animals and, the vast majority, they are usually negative. Many have to do with the extinction of some species and others because we still do not understand how some whales finally end up on the beaches to die. Just last week we learned about the case of these 8 pilot whales.

But not everything will be negative news, but some, like this one, draw a smile on our face to see how a 13-year-old boy manages who has managed to stop the Maasai from killing more lions in order to protect their livestock. An ancestral fight for this tribe in which the lion has always been one of its worst enemies.

No university degree or doctorate, Richard Turere has been able to have the brilliant idea of creating an invention to keep lions away from livestock and with the positive that it is not even caused any kind of harm to them. Turere is a young Maasai teenager living south of Nairobi National Park who knows about the fight for territory between lions and his tribe.

Turere

A town that is estimated to have one million individuals who live almost entirely from agriculture and livestock. A relationship of fear and hatred, but in which there is also mutual respect, since they have coexisted in the region for centuries. In the area where Richard lives it is normal for animals move freely, since the Park is not limited in any way, so on many occasions the lions are able to reach the pastures where the Maasai have their cattle. They try to hunt their animals and they defend him.

Richard has found the solution with an invention that combines fire and movement. The lions are scared if they see the human with fire, so Turere built a solar panel that charges during the day and to which he has added a transformer, a switch and some light bulbs. This invention results in a system of flashing lights that surround the perimeter and makes it appear that there are people walking with flashlights, so the lions avoid approaching.

It is the government itself that has awarded him a scholarship study in a prestigious school.
