Why should you recycle used oil?

used oil must be recycled

Something that is essential in every home and that is used daily is cooking oil. Imagine the number of liters per day that have to be produced of used oil on the entire planet.

Well, only one liter of used oil is layer of pollute almost 1.000 liters of drinking water. Therefore, it is important to be aware and recycle the oil instead of pouring it down the sink. Do you want to know how and why we should recycle used oil?

Waste oil

Almost 35% of all millions of liters of oil used in the kitchen ends up as waste at the end of its useful life. Pouring the oil we use down the sink causes serious impacts on the environment. Without going any further, blockages occur in pipes, complicate water treatments in purification stations, contribute to the appearance of harmful bacteria and, as a result, the increase in urban pests and the generation of bad odors at home.

As we all know, water and oil cannot be mixed as oil is an immiscible liquid. If oil from sewers reaches rivers a surface film forms (the oil stays on top because it is less dense) which negatively affects the oxygen exchange between air and water, and, therefore, the living beings that inhabit rivers are harmed. If a liter of oil contaminates 1000 liters of water, do you really take responsibility for pouring the oil down the sink?

Increase in energy and water consumption

Used oil is recycled in these containers

Water contaminated by oil requires cleaning in water treatment plants. In order to clean all the water with used oil, a significant volume of liters of drinking water is used, very scarce and expensive, which has to be heated with the consequent energy expenditure. This cleaning roughly equates to about 40 extra euros per household and year. In other words, for the 5.000.000 households in Spain, we obtain a result of 600.000.000 euros invested in an absurd task that could be avoided.

More worrying is the volume of drinking water required for this cleaning process, which reaches the figure of 1.500 million liters per year.

To recycle the used oil you just have to store it in bottles and deposit them in the containers for the used oil. They are orange in color and are near other recycling bins. You can also go to the clean point of your city.
