We will have a new renewable auction

Renewable energy comparison

The Minister of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, Álvaro Nadal, has indicated that the next auction of renewable energies for 3.000 megawatts (MW) 'green' will allow practically reach the 20% target set by the European agreements for 2020.

At a press conference after the Council of Ministers, Nadal indicated that with the new auction, which has been authorized by the Government, with the approval of a Royal Decree for its convocation, and the "extra" measures adopted, Spain will reach 19,5% renewables, from the current 17,3%, "Very close to getting closer to reaching the 2020 target."

In this way, he considered the situation of Spain on this path towards the 2020 renewable targets of "comfortable compliance path", compared to other European countries that will have to do "A big effort" to fulfill them. In addition, the state approves an aid plan of 500 euros for the purchase of cars with alternative energy.

In a press conference after the council, the Minister of Energy, Álvaro Nadal, explained that the award criteria will be the same as in the previous one, firstly the maximum discount offered and, in the event of a tie, the greatest number of hours of operation, a criterion that it has recognized that caused wind energy installations, which operate day and night, to be awarded at the same price most of the megawatts that were auctioned , which were also 3.000.

This factor received criticism from the reference photovoltaic associations, UNEF and Anpier, who see in its application a favorable treatment for wind power and who highlight the capacity of solar to compete on equal terms.

However, the Minister of Energy considered that photovoltaics will have on this occasion "much more capacity to enter", since, although it competes worse in hours, it will have a greater supply, since 99,3% of the total from the previous auction went to wind power.

The politician commented that the result of the previous auction, held in May, was "extraordinarily good", with a demand for almost 10.000 MW, of which almost 8.000 MW They were at the minimum price.

In this way, the government decided to hold a new "green" energy auction, since there is a lot of demand, Nadal said. According to the minister "The renewable is of legal age and is capable of competing face to face with the rest of the energies."

In this regard, Nadal considered that there is a "very large" supply capacity from the previous auction, both wind and photovoltaic, which will allow "a combination of both when it is resolved" this new award.

Previous auction

On May 17, the Government already awarded 3.000 MW of 'green' power, of which 2.979 MW, 99,3% of the total went to wind power, as it is the technology that more energy produced per unit of installed power; 1 MW to photovoltaic, 0,03%; and 20 MW to other technologies, 0,66%.

The Forestalia Group (big winner), Gas Natural Fenosa, Endesa's 'renewable' subsidiary (Enel Green Power), and Gamesa were the big winners of the auction as more than 2.600 MW were awarded.

Forestalia once again swept, in the same way as in last year's auction, by winning the biggest package in the auction, with 1.200 megawatts (MW), 40% of the total.

For its part, Gas Natural Fenosa was awarded 667 MW, while Enel Green Power España was awarded 540 MW and Siemens Games with 206 MW.

Other smaller groups, such as Norvento, which won 128 MW, and the Aragonese group Brial, which acquired 237 MW, practically completed the total of the 3.000 renewable MW launched.

Wait on Garoña

On the other hand, it has affirmed that the Government has not yet made any decision on the closure or renewal of the license of the Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant (Burgos) and that it will not do so. until I know the opinions and allegations of "all" those interested in the matter. Although, the minister added that the Government "still" has not started any meeting, so that interested parties can argue and submit their comments on the matter.

The Government also approved two other royal decrees, one of aid to municipalities with less than 20.000 inhabitants for projects of energy efficiency; In addition, the Movea Plan for aid for the purchase of cars powered by alternative energy, endowed with 336 million euros and 14,26 million, respectively.
