Tunisia is going to invest a billion dollars for renewables

In our world we need a push in alternative energies that do not pollute and deplete fossil fuels such as oil, coal or natural gas. A good economy based on the energy transition should be the key in all countries to evolve towards decarbonization by 2050.

To achieve greener goals and develop economically by reducing pollution and impacts on the environment, Tunisia joins the green side. This year it intends to invest about a billion dollars to be able to increase energy generation through renewables for the country's electricity.

Investment in renewable energy

The General Directorate of Energy of the Ministry of Energy and Mines has reported that the investment of one billion dollars would allow the installation of a clean energy source of 1.000 MW, 350MW of wind and 650 MW in photovoltaic solar. Of all the money invested in renewables, 600 million will be contributed to the private sector. In 2016, Tunisia had 342 renewable MW, which generated 579 GWh of clean electricity.

The expenses that Tunisia has to develop renewable energies depend on the difference that exists between the rates of the investors in relation to the price of the fuel that is at each moment in which they are invoiced. That is why renewable energy development projects are subject to a bid and authorization regime.

For example, the STEG (Tunisian Electricity and Gas) power grid development program, which includes the integration of renewable energy, it will cost about 620 million dinars (270 million dollars) during the period 2017-2020.

The development of renewable energies can favor production costs, reducing them, since they directly affect the financial balance of the country. In addition, with the development of green technology, they will pollute less and will not harm the environment. The Tunisian Solar Plan, approved in 2012, establishes that the contribution of renewable energies must increase to 30% in 2030.

The development of renewable technologies has to be combined with small and assimilable investments that allow the technologies to be tested as they are developed in the process that problems are solved in isolated areas, they will already enter into competition with non-renewable ones, when at the moment, neither large investments nor large amortizations that only make the transition more expensive, the neurotic desires of mindless environmentalists, which there are, and the rush for change can cost us a great change.
