The toy industry and deforestation

Greenpeace has denounced the toy companies most important in the world to be used in their packaging paper and paperboard from the destruction of forests in Indonesia.

It is estimated that 1.000.000 hectares a year are cut down in this country, the majority for the manufacture of paper and cardboard that is bought by the toy industry at a very competitive price surely.

The companies denounced are Mattel which is the manufacturer of all Barbi products, Hasbro which makes Transformers, Disney and Lego.

These large corporations are not directly responsible since it is their suppliers who sell them products that were obtained by destroying the the environment. But they should buy from these companies if they want to be considered planet-friendly companies.

Of all these companies, the only one that made a public commitment to change its shares was Lego. This company announced a plan to reduce its environmental impact and not collaborate in deforesting the jungles and Indonesian forests.

As a policy, the amount of packaging, will use Recycled material and what comes from new fibers will be with FSC certified no protected natural area was damaged. In addition, Lego confirmed that it will not continue to have as suppliers the companies that deforest.

Lego was the only company that performed well as it recognized its mistakes and began to correct them.

The rest of the toy companies only tried to disassociate themselves from the issue or derive responsibilities but made no commitments to improve their environmental behavior.

It is important that as consumers we take into account the attitudes of companies on social and environmental issues before buying. We must demand that they not directly or indirectly pollute or damage the environment to produce their products or packaging.

The jungle and forests that are being deforested in Indonesia and other areas of Asia are home to hundreds of species, most of them in danger of extinction.
