The European Commission presents a new proposal to reduce emissions

vehicle pollution

Reducing the emissions of polluting gases from transport is of vital importance to fight against global warming and climate change. This requires stricter emissions legislation.

The European Commission (EC) has presented in Brussels a proposal for more demanding legislation on polluting emissions from vehicles. It also aims to make the European Union the world's benchmark for electric vehicles. What is this legislation about?

More demanding legislation

Since the vehicle was invented in Europe, it should be reinvented and improved here. This initiative to reduce pollution and improve vehicle capacity and its modernization coincides with the initiation of the Bonn Climate Summit (COP23).

The European Commission plan, which must now be negotiated with the European Parliament and the European Council, which represents the countries, establishes several lines of action to contribute, from transport, to the objective of fulfilling the commitment adopted by the European Union ( EU) in the Paris Climate Agreement of reduce its polluting emissions by 40% by 2030.

Manufacturers must reduce emissions

Not only citizens must make an effort to reduce vehicle use, use more public transport or bicycle, but also manufacturers must create vehicles whose emissions are 15% lower.

Today's vehicles emit 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The objective is that they only emit 80 grams. Each manufacturer is free to choose the technology necessary to achieve these goals.

The European Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action, Miguel Arias Cañete, has indicated that the limit for 2015 will serve to start investments and that of 2030 to provide "stability."

In addition to reducing emissions from conventional vehicles, the increase in electric vehicles in circulation is being promoted. To power the electric vehicle, lThe European Commission will offer up to 800 million euros to reinforce the number of electric chargers deployed, and another 200 million euros of aid in R&D for manufacturers that meet the CO2 reduction targets mentioned above.
