Air pollution is a serious health problem for people. The European Union has warned Spain and eight other member states to reduce air pollution or otherwise there will be legal consequences.

The EU has forced Spain and eight other member states to reduce air pollution without delay and put on the table actions that are sufficient to achieve those goals.
The Member States notified by the EU are Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. All of them have exceeded the air pollution limits for both PM10 fine particles and carbon dioxide.
"In the face of these long-standing failures to take serious action and the prospect that ongoing legal processes will continue, I call on all member states to address this life-threatening problem with the urgency it requires."
It has also been mentioned that the particular circumstances of each country should not pose a problem to address the situation, since it is an urgent problem.
Given the situation of extreme air pollution, the EU has indicated that there will be no new deadlines regarding the legal process. Air pollution causes 400.000 people die a year throughout the European Union.
