Solar thermal energy generated almost 4% of all the energy demanded in summer

Thermosolar energy

Renewable energies in Spain are gaining a niche in the market little by little depending on the possibilities offered and allowed by our Government. Solar thermal energy has managed to cover almost 4% of all electricity demand in Spain in summer.

The data has been made public by Protermosolar. It is the association that represents the Spanish sector of the thermoelectric solar industry. In June, solar thermal power generation managed to cover 4,4% of all demand. Specifically, on June 19 a record high was recorded: It managed to cover 9,4% of the entire demand in the country.

In Spain there are 49 thermosolar plants that are operational. Between all of them they have an installed power 2.300 megawatts (MW). Thanks to this energy contribution, these solar thermal plants contributed to the generation of electricity with 4,4% in June, 4% in July and August, and 3,1% in September, providing generated electricity figures very similar to those of photovoltaic energy, although the photovoltaic installed power is more than double that of solar thermal power.

prothermal solar highlights in a statement that the thermosolar plants that have a storage system are those that contribute to a nightly base load thanks to the fact that they can provide a power of more than 700 MW from sunset to about 24 a.m. early morning. Centrals with storage can operate without interruption XNUMX hours a day as long as there are successive days of sunshine.

According to Protermosolar studies, the plant facilities are increasingly efficient and productive:

«The learning curve of the first years of operation of solar thermal plants is showing its effects, having overcome the five terawatt hours (5 TWh) of annual production grouped in 2015, which underlines that, with an average of five years of operation, the thermosolar plants are increasingly operated with greater efficiency and reliability as their production increases year after year, despite the fact that none have been installed. new central in Spain since 2013 ″.
