The planet needs more renewable energy

gas reduction

Renewable energies are the best weapon in the fight against climate change and the energy transition towards a world with fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

In this case, Héctor de Prado, Head of Climate and Energy at Friends of the Earth, has made an appeal to warn that the energy transition process should be accelerated, since the planet "demands" that we act fast. Could we have a world free of fossil fuels?

Our planet demands action

greenhouse gas emissions

Clean energies are increasingly necessary and more useful. A world and an economy based on renewable energies is the key to gaining a foothold in energy markets and gaining competitiveness. Investing in renewable energy, although initially expensive, can help us win the fight against climate change over the years.

Let us remember that renewables do not emit greenhouse gases, or at least very little, cCompared to fossil fuels like oil and coal.

The conference 'Clean energy for Europe: the role of citizens and cities'has brought together experts from the European Union, Spanish city councils and environmental organizations to discuss the role that cities and individuals should play in the transition towards a decarbonised economy with a greater use of renewable energies.

The aim is to ensure that all Europeans can have renewable energy and various proposals have been made in the so-called Winter Package. There are many European cities that have taken giant steps in the world of renewables and that, thanks to them, have been able to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite the fact that European legislation may not be so demanding, there are large and medium-sized cities that are two steps ahead of the legislation, that is, they have managed to evolve technologically in terms of renewable energy and emissions much more than what is required by law .

However, the policy analyst in the representation of the European Commission in Madrid, Juan Luis Ballesteros, He recalled that "Europe has opted to take the forefront in the energy transition towards renewable energy" promoting the energy transition at a constant, albeit slow, pace.

What we are trying to achieve is that renewables begin to grow more and more and it is not in a variable way, but that once they are established in the markets, they remain as the energies that feed our cities.

Change in the European energy model

clean energy

Changing energy patterns is quite complex. Until now, it has operated in a 'comfortable' way with fossil fuels. However, our planet is demanding that a new energy model based on energies that do not emit greenhouse gases be spearheaded to prevent global warming from continuing to increase.

The role of cities and large companies that are committed to Clean energy is essential to drive the change towards a new decarbonized energy model.

Although the planet's need for a change in energy is urgent, it seems that the Government is turning a deaf ear. The PP does not bet on renewable energies, but will continue with the world of fossil fuels.

Cities such as Barcelona, Pamplona or Córdoba are in the process of creating municipal energy marketing companies, despite the ceiling that discourages self-consumption and complicates the task of promotion at the local level.

More renewable energy

The second part of the day has dealt with the fundamental role that citizens have in the face of the energy transition and the paradigm shift. If citizens do not bet on renewables, large companies will not be able to proliferate in terms of renewables.

Rodrigo Irurzun, from Ecooo, promoter of the 50/50 project aimed at raising awareness in municipal schools, has defended the study 'The potential of energy citizens', prepared together with Greenpeace, Rescoop and Eref, where it is stated that half of the citizens of the EU - more than 264 million people - could generate their own electricity for the year 2050.
