For the first time, more is invested in the electricity sector

The electricity sector has more and more investment

The world needs an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The energy used through oil, natural gas and coal are the cause of greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change around the world.

Today, you could say, which is the first time that more money has been invested in electricity than in fossil fuels.

Investments in the electricity sector

In 2016, global investments in the electricity sector reached 1,7 trillion dollars (equivalent to 1,5 trillion euros). To get an idea of the impact of this investment, this figure is equivalent to 2,2% of world GDP. Speaking of the energy transition, this is good news.

However, This figure implies a decrease of 12% compared to the money invested in the previous year. This causes a second consecutive annual decline in which the level of investment in the electricity sector falls. For the first time, investments in the electricity sector exceeded combined spending on oil, gas and coal. 43% of the money invested in supplies corresponds to clean energy.

To better specify the figures, global investment in electricity it remained stable at around 630 million euros. This had a greater increase in spending on networks, but less investment in coal-fired electricity generation. But there is considerable confidence that investment in renewables research and development will stabilize after several years of declines.

In 2016, China was the world's largest investor in the energy sector, while the US was responsible for 16% of the investments, despite the significant drop in spending on oil and gas. With the departure of the United States from the Paris Agreement, investments in fuels will increase, although in the rest of the world they will fall.
