Ecocat, the first Spanish catamaran that works with solar energy

boat powered by renewables

The world of shipping is also joining the revolution of renewables and zero CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. In this case, we are going to talk about ecocat, the first passenger catamaran in Europe that is powered by solar energy and is 100% electric.

Do you want to know more about this new green transport model?

Ecocat counts with 120 solar panels that provide enough energy to transport 120 passengers without the need to use any type of fossil fuel. This contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere in the fight against climate change.

It is about 20 meters long and 26 tons in weight. It has joined the line of ecological ships in Spain called ECOBOAT developed by the technological shipyard Metaltec Naval.

Because it is 100% electric, does not have or require any type of auxiliary motor, so it is totally autonomous for eight hours without the need to recharge. It has a solar wing system that can be deployed and retracted. This allows that, by having solar panels on said wings, increase the sun collection surface to increase the solar energy produced.

Its material is entirely naval aluminum. The Ecocat is part of a project that aims to increase the renewable and clean forms of propulsion of maritime transport. As aluminum is a light, resistant, non-combustible and 100% recyclable material, it has been decided to build with this type of material.

More respectful with the environment

Thanks to this sustainable transport model creating impacts on the maritime environment is avoided, whose sensitivity to pollution and noise is high.

This investment has been made without any kind of aid to support the initiative and is causing more sensation outside of Spain than within.

In February it will begin to be operational.
