Dozens of baby shark found dead off the Gulf of Mexico coast

Bull shark pups

Residents near Mobile Bay woke up in a very strange way this past Saturday when they learned that dozens of baby bull shark they were found dead on the coast. This event took place on the beach of Belle Air near Dauphin Island.

It is now that Dauphine Island Sea Lab officials are investigating the reasons for this overwhelming fact. Shark pups of almost a meter in length were found in piles. In total they have been 57 baby bull shark those that were found on the beach on Saturday and have already been taken for an autopsy for the investigation.

It is believed that a fishing net is what caused the bull shark pups to die finally on the coast. Chris Blankenship, Director of Marine Resources, says:

From what we could see, someone put a fishing net on the beach and the sharks ended up swimming in the net to become entangled. If sharks don't move through the water, they die almost instantly.

Researchers have collected a piece of the fishing net for their investigation. As far as you can tell, this type of network need a license and it has to be monitored when it is in the water. So the doubts arise if this network was legal or not.

Blankenship refers to this very thing:

There were no marks of any kind on this piece of fishing net that was on the beach, so it's hard to tell if the person who put it on had a license and whether they were using it legally or not.

A fact that it's not totally a tragedy, but it does make it clear that if someone sometimes finds a network in the water that is not being attended to or is out of the ordinary, it is important that they inform the local authorities. Sharks are still in the news, as it happens with this.
