Biofuels, a risk for food security

Biofuel food risk

The demand for yellow corn grows every year since one of its Currently its main uses is the manufacture of biofuels.

Despite this, several international organizations have warned that, according to different analyzes issued between 2010 and 2017, the effects caused by allocating said agricultural productions to fuel instead of food.

In the report "The Future of Food and Agriculture: Trends and Challenges”Published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), it is estimated that by the year 2050, agriculture will have to produce more than 50% of food and biofuels of those that are produced today to meet world demand.

Although having a significant increase in agricultural production land means more food, this also has its negative effects.

The aforementioned document states that, with higher food production, there is also a direct impact on the environment.

During the past 20 years, agricultural expansion has been maintained with an average of 4 billion ha in the world, also taking into account the loss of forest cover that has slowed between 900 and 2010.

The FAO, however, explains that there are indicative regional differences, since while in tropical and subtropical regions they lost 7 million hectares of forest per year in these 20 years, the increase in the agricultural area has had a rate of 6 million ha per year.

The highest annual net loss of forest area has been suffered by the countries with the lowest incomes as well as the highest annual net gain in agricultural area.

The CFS, Committee on World Food Security, warns that since the beginning of 2013, that is, since the production of biofuels involves risks in environmental, social and economic aspects, Competition is already being created between crops for this purpose and for use in food production.
