APPA wants the 35% target for renewables approved by the PE

Building, exterior of the European Parliament

The Association of Renewable Energy Producers (APPA Renovables) values positively Parliament's broad support for the 35% target, although it regrets that certain binding goals have not been established at the national level and some more specific proposals.

However, the establishment of national plans and objectives is left to the States, despite the good news represented by the long consensus in favor of the 35% objective.

This is why the Association urges the Government to assume this vast majority of European and Spanish society, having this 35% as a national objective, in addition to having it within the same future Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition.

From APPA they say:

"The Spanish Government's commitment to the Energy Transition must also be demonstrated in its position before the European Council, raising its current position of 27%."

If you want to achieve a minimum participation of around 27% to 35% of renewable energies (positions of the Council and Parliament), the largest contribution of all possible renewable technologies will be needed by Spain, since the percentage of renewable energy must be doubled in just 12 years.

APPA Renovables considers that:

"It is worrying that the proposals approved in relation to the biofuel sector (excluding conventional biofuels from the obligation of renewable fuels, limiting their contribution to 5% and banning certain types of biodiesel from 2021) seriously endanger the survival of the national industry and, therefore, its contribution to the achievement of the objectives ”.

A strong message of help for photovoltaics

The Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) considers, for its part, that:

"The position expressed today by the European Parliament regarding the future Renewable Energy Directive of the Clean Energy Package for all Europeans expresses a strong message of support for photovoltaics and all renewable energies."

"The definition of a target of 35% of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030 demonstrates the commitment of the European Parliament and the ambition necessary to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement."

"The photovoltaic sector, driven by the constant increase in its competitiveness, is ready to play a leading role in our country in the transition towards a sustainable energy model."

UNEF also applauds the support of the European Parliament for the defense of self-consumption and indicates:

"It is a right that all citizens have to be able to exercise without artificial barriers, and to the elimination of the support toll or imposed on the sun."

"The Member States have the responsibility to comply with the democratic mandate issued by the European Parliament to continue advancing on the path towards fulfilling the commitments defined by the Paris Agreement."

The Spanish wind sector is not far behind

PREPA, the Wind Business Association, also welcomes the decision of the European Parliament.

However, it points out that:

"In the absence of binding objectives for the States, the challenge is to achieve the appropriate policies and instruments to achieve the common objective of the EU."

Said result of the vote, coming out with broad support (of more than 70% support) in the European Parliament, It is a fairly relevant move in the European Union for the wind sector and its future, as well as in Spain for the wind industry.

It may be that for the Member States the objective itself is not binding, but for Spain, this objective is accessible and even surmountable since Spain is a country that has a lot of potential and renewable resources, both in technologies and in volume.

Wind industry in Europe

The European wind industry is capable of employing more than 263.000 people, contributing in turn to the GDP of the European Union with 36.000 million euros.

In the previous year it accounted for about 8.000 million euros in exports, of which 2.500 million correspond to Spain.

As dictated by PREPA's analysis of the "Necessary elements for the energy transition. Proposals for the electricity sector",

“The contribution of wind power in Spain will be 30% in the electricity mix in 2030, with an installed wind power of 40.000 MW.

For Spain, this wind energy contribution represents economic and social benefits equivalent to a contribution to GDP of more than 4.000 million euros, a reduction in imports of fossil fuels by 18 million tons of oil equivalent and would avoid the emission of 47 million tons of CO2 ”.
