La atmospheric pollution it is a serious problem that must be treated and measures taken to reduce it. Due to air pollution, thousands of people die each year with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. That is why the European Parliament It will approve in two weeks a modification of the regulation that deals with everything related to the reduction of national emissions of six atmospheric pollutants.
The limits established by the new modification will apply for 2020 and 2030, after finalizing the negotiations of the European Parliament and the European Council that began in 2013.
States are having trouble complying with the current air pollution directive. The MEP Julie Girling has remembered that there is 17 countries that have not yet managed to reduce gas emissions into the atmosphere. Of course, among the countries that do not succeed is Spain.
The modification that will be made in the European directive contemplates new atmospheric pollution limits, but does not study or comment Nothing on the specific actions that the Member States must take to achieve a reduction in pollutant emissions. The improvement in the electric public transport networks and the improvement in the productivity of livestock companies have been mentioned. In this way, polluting gases would be reduced.
With the modification of this directive, the aim is to reduce pollution levels up to 70% by 2030. Although the implementation will cost about 3.000 million euros, in the long run, the benefits will be higher, since they will generate about 40.000 jobs, adding about 40.000 million annually.
The six polluting gases included in the directive are the sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ammonia, volatile organic compounds, particulates less than 2,5 parts per million, and methane. It does not collect CO2 as it is found in other European regulations.
