Spain must meet climate objectives with an energy transition

Paris Spain Agreement

Spain entered into the Paris Agreement to stop climate change and the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, assures that the requirements of this Agreement will be met with a favorable energy transition for the country and its economy.

In what timeframe does Spain intend to meet the demanding requirements of the Paris Agreement?

Spain and climate change

When it is said that the objectives of the Paris Agreement are demanding, the difficulty that Spain has for an energy transition towards renewables is mentioned, given the great dependence that our country has on fossil fuels.

Rajoy attended this climate commitment on behalf of Spain and in his speech at the summit considered that the Paris Agreement is a very important milestone in the fight against climate change because it is the first time that there is a legally binding pact that commits an important part of international society.

The objectives of the Paris Agreement must be met

"Spain will meet without any problems its demanding commitments in 2020 and we are working on a climate change and energy transition law that will also guarantee compliance in 2030 ”, said the President of the Spanish Government.

To meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement, it is necessary for Spain to move to an energy transition based on renewable energies and decarbonisation. This change in the mode of energy production will be facilitated by compliance with the new climate change law.

In Spain, the energy transition has its foundations based on energy efficiency, since it reduces energy consumption, generates economic activity, jobs and is positive for external competitiveness, while reducing external dependence.

It is essential that renewable energies be increased and for this, Rajoy recalled that Spain has held two auctions that will allow the incorporation of 8.000 megawatts of renewable power without the need for premiums.

Despite that renewable energy is necessary and it has to be imposed as the main energy model, it is impossible that coal can be replaced overnight. There are countries that are highly dependent on nuclear energy and cannot eliminate its use so easily either. We work every day to improve renewable energies, but today all energies are still needed.

In addition, he stressed the importance of better electrical interconnections between neighboring countries and explained that the better they are, the decision-making in favor of renewable energies will progress.
