Germany manages to generate renewable energy to almost completely cover energy demand

On May 8, Germany managed to generate enough renewable energy in one day to be able to satisfy 90% of the total energy demand. This fact is a historical record in terms of progress in renewable energy production. Almost all the demand and consumption of electricity in the country was generated by renewable energy and there were consumers who charged for electricity instead of paying for it and this led to a negative price of electricity.

Thanks to the potential of the sun and the wind, a large amount of electrical energy was generated. Hydraulic and biomass energies also contributed to this record. This shows the potential that alternative energies can have. I know generated 55 gigawatts of the 63 that were consumed throughout the country on that day.

Already last year, Germany managed to reach a maximum level of green energy generation by producing 83% of the energy demanded. The days of strong wind and sun are the most favorable for alternative energy plants. Normally, they can cover between 60% and 70% of all demand. It should be added that the day these figures were obtained is Sunday, and in general, on Sundays, the energy demand of citizens is lower.

Christoph Podewils, Agora spokesperson, assures that if that Sunday had been one of the ones with the lowest energy consumption, 100% of the energy demanded could have been covered. The Germans set the price of the electricity bill depending on the production of energy and the demand of the citizens. At the peak of Sunday, May 8, the production of green energy was so high that there was an overproduction of energy since we must add the excess generated by polluting conventional energies. This caused electricity prices to plummet to Red numbers.
