Costa Rica is supplied for 300 days only with renewable energy

wind energy in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has already fulfilled more than 300 days in which its electrical system has operated exclusively with renewable energy, especially hydraulic energy.

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) in a statement indicated that the 300-day mark was reached without any need to activate thermal power generation plants.

Without a doubt, it is a historical mark for this country where they already have events like these, one in 2015 reaching 299 days and in 2016 reaching 271 days with 100% renewable energy.

According to ICE:

"The figure for 2017 could increase in the weeks remaining until the end of the year"

In the little that goes this year (2018) the country already has a electricity production of 99,62% of its 5 sources of renewable energy generationAccording to data from the National Energy Control Center and cited by ICE, these have the highest rate since 1987.

For 2016 see the image below.

ICE stated:

“In 2017, electricity generation has been based on 78,26% from hydro plants, 10,29% from wind, 10,23% from geothermal energy (volcanoes) and 0,84% from biomass and the sun.

The remaining 0,38% came from thermal plants powered by hydrocarbons ”.

Carlos Manuel Obregon, Executive President of ICE explains that:

“The optimization of the matrix has allowed us to take advantage of the high availability of water. Regulating reservoirs offer us a guarantee to maximize the use of variable sources, mainly running water and wind, and at the same time dose the contribution of geothermal energy ”.

Of course, 2017 has been projected as the year with increased wind energy production of the history of Costa Rica, counting 1.014,82 GW / h since January, from some 16 wind plants installed in the country.
