1000 municipal buildings will be self-sufficient in Barcelona in 2018

The Barcelona City Council announced a few days ago that in a year a thousand municipal buildings and the street lighting of the city will be supplied by the future energy marketer, promoted by Ada Colau.

The Councilor for the Presidency, Water and Energy, Eloi Badia, also added that only 20.000 families will be able to contract the energy of the Consistory through the future municipal company "Since the laws do not allow a public company to serve more than 20% of private clients."

Last March, the plenary session of the Barcelona City Council approved the creation of the public company Barcelona Energía, this news was already discussed in renovablesverdes, you can consult it HERE.

This future public company, in addition to generating energy, will buy and sell electricity from renewable sources. The company will allow the Ada Colau government to be self-sufficient and stop depending on traditional electric. A month later, the City Council announced that it would allocate 12,4 million euros for the installation of solar panels in 48 municipal buildings.

The strategy of the municipal government is that - through aid and patronage - private companies and individuals install plates with which generate energy on roofs of municipal buildings in addition to schools, libraries or civic centers.

As if that were not enough, the City Council has planned the installation of plates on roofs, dividing walls and other public spaces such as the Marina bridge. Actions will also be supported in private buildings where the investment is made by individuals who will receive municipal aid through bonuses or some type of subsidy.

Badia presented the installation of an energy-generating pergola in the Plaza del Center in the Les Corts neighborhood. The city has a dozen of these types of pergolas spread over seven of the ten districts.

Of the existing pergolas in the city, some were created to generate energy and others have been converted for the same purpose. The energy they generate is injects directly into the electrical network of the company or it serves to feed other consumptions, such as the public lighting of the environment

They have enough installed power to generate energy with which 500 homes could be supplied. The Consistory ensures that the experience of the pergolas It has been more than positive, there are currently four other facilities under construction.

"We turn solar panels into a daily architectural element, and therefore, into an element of awareness", has told the Councilor for Water and Energy, Eloi Badia. A good example is the pergola in the Plaza del Center, located over a children's play area and which supplies 70% of the energy needs for lighting in the plaza.

The Councilor for the Presidency, Water and Energy assured that it seeks to “double the installed capacity of renewable energy in the city. Pergolas are an element very interesting in this aspect, since it allows us to interact with neighbors and demonstrate that in public space we are also capable of generating renewable energy ”.

Some of the twelve pergolas inject the energy generated directly into the electricity grid, while others, such as the one in the Plaza del Center, accumulate the electricity in a battery system. In the case of the installation of the Corts, the photovoltaic panels have a power that provides light to the 25 street lamps in the square.

The four new future pergolas will be installed in Plaça Joan Pelegrí, covering the Sants Station tracks (both in Sants-Montjuïc), Joan Cortada street (Horta-Guinardó) and Serra i Martí park (Nou Barris). ). There are six other pending bids.

New projects

As detailed by the city council, the tender will be opened for 31 new projects for the installation of solar panels in buildings of public use. Badia stressed that, in the private sphere, the City Council will give priority to those projects “that not only seek private investment, but also work with ethical banking or private financing models".

The councilor stressed that, as promised in their electoral program, the current government team seeks "a transition from a model based on fossil fuels to a local model, based on renewable energy and zero kilometer."
